The situation this is relating to is when an ESXi host in the cluster has died and it’s virtual machines need to be moved to a remaining host.
- Firstly open up the VSphere Web Client and find the ESXi host that has shut down.
- Then remove the host from the inventory. You will notice that all of the servers that it was hosting will disappear.
- Go to the file structure (storage).
- Find the san hosting the server we want.
- Find the server’s folder on the san.
- Right click the vmx file for the server.
- Register the VM.
- Choose Farnham and then ‘Next’.
- Choose the Farnham cluster and then ‘Next’.
- Choose the ESX you want to host the VM and then ‘Next’.
- Finish.
- Watch the tasks and ensure that the server registers.
- Go back to VM’s and Templates.
- Find the server.
- Open the summary page of the server.
- Power on the server and watch the tasks to ensure it comes back on.
- You will be asked ‘Has the server been moved or copied?’ The answer to this is moved.
- Open the console and ensure the server comes up.
