Move VM’s to Another Host Once A Host Has Died

The situation this is relating to is when an ESXi host in the cluster has died and it’s virtual machines need to be moved to a remaining host.

 

  1. Firstly open up the VSphere Web Client and find the ESXi host that has shut down.
  2. Then remove the host from the inventory. You will notice that all of the servers that it was hosting will disappear.
  3. Go to the file structure (storage).
  4. Find the san hosting the server we want.
  5. Find the server’s folder on the san.
  6. Right click the vmx file for the server.
  7. Register the VM.
  8. Choose Farnham and then ‘Next’.
  9. Choose the Farnham cluster and then ‘Next’.
  10. Choose the ESX you want to host the VM and then ‘Next’.
  11. Finish.
  12. Watch the tasks and ensure that the server registers.
  13. Go back to VM’s and Templates.
  14. Find the server.
  15. Open the summary page of the server.
  16. Power on the server and watch the tasks to ensure it comes back on.
  17. You will be asked ‘Has the server been moved or copied?’ The answer to this is moved.
  18. Open the console and ensure the server comes up.
