How To Reset A Windows 7 Password If It’s Forgotten
- Find a Windows 7 disk, any old disk, it doesn’t even have to be the same version, and put it in the drive.
- Boot from the CD.
- Click ‘Next’ on the screens with your language and keyboard choices.
- Don’t install the software, click the link called ‘Repair Your Computer’.
- Wait whilst your Windows 7 installation is located on your computer.
- Once the installation is found make a note of the drive letter found in the ‘Location’ column. Most Windows 7 installations will show D: though it may be different.
- Select ‘Windows 7’ from the ‘Operating System’ list and then click ‘Next’.
- From the ‘System Recovery Options’ choose ‘Command Prompt’.
- In the Command Box type in “copy d:\windows\system32\utilman.exe d:\” without the quotes and replacing d: with the OS driver letter you found earlier.
- Then type “copy d:\windows\system32\cmd.exe d:\windows\system32\utilman.exe” again without the quotes and replacing d: with the OS driver letter you found earlier.
- Close the Command Box.
- Then remove the disk and reboot the PC.
- Once the login screen appears locate the little icon ob the bottom-left of the screen that looks like a pie with a square around it and then ‘Click It!’
- With the comman prompt open type “ net user myusername mypassword” without the quotes and replacing ‘MyUserName’ with your username and ‘MyPassword’ with the new password.
- Then close the command prompt window
- Login with your new password.
