Adobe Reader “cannot find or create the font”

Problem

When opening a PDF in Acrobat Reader you get the following warning regarding a missing font

This can be the result of the PDF being created in a third party app.

The issue is that on similar computers with exactly the same OS – you are able to read the file without a problem.

There are many resolutions on the internet from re-installing Acrobat Reader by first removing all Adobe products, associated files and folders to using tools to embed the correct font.

If you check the font used in Acrobat (open the file and go to File, Properties, and the Font tab) it will show a list of the fonts used in the document.

On a good machine for the above font the properties read

Type: TrueType (CID)
Encoding: Identity-H
Actual Font: Lucinda Sans
Actual Font Type: TruType

On a problem machine the properties read

Type: TrueType (CID)
Encoding: Identity-H
Actual Font: Unknown
Actual Font Type: Unknown

Resolution

The font installed is an older version and will need replacing

Search the web for the font (in this case Lucida Sans Regular – a TrueType Font ie a .ttf) and download.

Drag and drop font from the download location to the C:\Windows\Fonts folder.

Then test rogue document.
