The keys on a Mitel phone are all programmable. They are initially set to a default. Below is the instruction for mapping a custom key on a Mitel 5312 phone though the same principal is the same for all Mitel / Inter-Tel phones. Just select the correct model when setting up a Keymap.
Note that this procedure is done on the Mitel server in the System Administration manager
Here is the default map for a Mitel 5312
To modify (say) Key 18 – a Feature Key that when pressed triggers System Feature 385 to Record a Call to use the Key 18 as a Speed Dial to dial an internal extension, go to the Mitel server and open the System Manager
On left hand side, go to the System tree, Phone-Related Information, Key Assignments and select IP/Digital Telephone. In the right window you will see something similar to this
There you can see the Default settings, plus a number of bespoke key assignments. Note the two different types of Keymap – one for the Inter-Tel type digital model and the other for the Mitel IP type model phone.
You can either create a new bespoke keymap (right click “Add to IP/Digital Telephone List…”) or modify an existing list.
So to modify ID 6 to use key 18 to call an extension, on left hand side select ID 6 and it shows in the right window
Now double click on the Value “5212/5312 Keymap” and it will open a window showing a phone with the keymap as illustrated above
On Key 18 select the value “Feature Key” and by clicking on the arrow that appears you will see many key options. For a direct dial select “PKM/DSS Key”. The Selection value will change to the first available extension. Click on the value and enter the extension you require to dial (for instance 1272). It will save and display “1272, IT Terry Gardiner”. Click OK.
Then if you would like to assign this bespoke mapping to a user’s extension, double click Standard List, and right click and select “Move to Standard List”. Select the correct phone model and then next and select the extension number from the given list and select Move Items. The following alert comes up
Select Yes as by selecting No you may overwrite a key that the user has programmed on the handset
And then click Finish
To see the result double click the Key 6 phone value and you will see the change
